Writer Interruptus and Other Stories edition by Philip Lear Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Philip Lear has reinvigorated the art of the anthology. His stories range from the oddly ordinary to the surreal. Yet, all the stories are firmly anchored to the frailty, strength and quirkiness of the human soul. Many of his characters are extremely flawed, yet others muster surprising strength, sort of like life. Of all the stories in this collection, my personal favorites were "The Spot" and "An Academic Exercise." Writer Interruptus is an engaging set of stories well worth the price.
Phil Lear is a creative and original writer. Like fine wine or or special chocolates, each story in this book is to be savored and enjoyed. As one would not gulp down extraordinary food, this book is probably best enjoyed story by story, so one can pause, taste the ideas and ponder the message. The stories spring from real life situations, that take unusual twists. In a "Traffic Jam," Lear creates a scene that each of us has probably imagined and uses his own imagination to magnify a situation to which we can relate. "The Tick" rings true with anyone who has pondered the passage of time. Enjoy this book. Savor the stories.
What a great book. Philip Lear is both imaginative and skillful in creating these short stories. Each is compact and includes vivid descriptions and realistic dialogues. If I had to choose one of Lear's stories from this book, my favorite would be "In Another Man's Shoes." I have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone who enjoys extremely creative and well-written short stories.
This collection of short stories is like a box of delightful chocolates -- each one offers something different yet
unpredictable. Clever story ideas inspire the reader to better appreciate the diversity of human experiences.
I found each story to be the perfect length for bedtime reading or during a daily commute on the train or bus.
It's fun to treat myself to one short story a day -- satisfying and memorable, with zero calories!
These amazing tales are consistently startling, weird, and mystical but enhanced by plentiful humor and frequent eroticism. All seem to have a common thread-they capture the way ordinary, but often vulnerable and likeable people, doing everyday things, think and behave under bizarre circumstances. Each yarn is unique and all share a haunting quality that may cause your own old sins to flash back. If you enjoy the art of story telling you will appreciate this superb and flawless collection. This is the first work I have seen from Lear. I predict these well crafted, riveting stories will attract acclaim and literary prizes.
Robert A Mayers, author of "The War Man."
I just finished the first story in this collection and I'm hooked. In only a few pages, the author has created a complete world, with intriguing people and a suspenseful story. I don't want to give away the ending, but it is still resonating with me. This collection is perfect when you're craving a great story but only have a limited amount of time to spare. Take a look for yourself!
